Demon Castle Dracula - Dark Night Prelude
(Castlevania Legends) |
| |
 |
|
Released a mere 6 months after the hugely
successful Akumajō
Dracula X Gekka no Yasōkyoku (1997), 'Dark Night Prelude' struck as a huge leap backwards for the series. No surprises
here: just a simple and bare bones platform game, on horrendously antiquated hardware.
The game features Sonia Belmont, the very first 'Belmont Vampire Killer'. Her brief
entanglement with Alucard, son of Dracula,
might peak the curiosity of those who enjoy the series'
roller-coaster narrative: did they have an
affair? If so, whom did they conceive? Christopher? Ralph? Simon?
Who knows. Who cares? There is only a threadbare plotline
here, and the game itself suffers from such a lack
of memorable moments that you tend to notice that the 'Continue'
screen is quite nice, and it's a welcome change to have a female heroine for a change.
Each of the first five levels contain a 'Collection
Item' to be found, and every boss holds a 'Soul Weapon'
- a special magic power that can then be used as a sub-weapon.
There is also one hidden level and some minor playability
tweaks here and there (move when crouching, change direction
in mid-jump) but none of this steals any thunder
from the previous Game Boy entry, the now six-year-old
Dracula
Densetsu II (1991).
A waste of time, then? Not necessarily… 'Dark
Night Prelude' is an OK Game Boy game, and that's
all there is to it. It's just that following so closely
in the footsteps of Symphony of the Night, this is one hell of a comedown.
