Fushigi no Yume no Alice
不思議の夢のアリス
7 Dec 1990

(In)famous for their early PC Engine curio Hany in the Sky (1988), Face have seldom produced anything of real value.
Alice is quite good though - it's a weird, wacky and enchanting little platform game based on the works of Lewis Carroll.
Also known as 'Alice in Wonderdream' (or directly translated as 'The Wonderful Dream of Alice') this is a smooth, no-nonsense platformer, whose gameplay feels like a direct mix of Super Mario Bros (1985) and Rockman (1987).
And dammit it's hard… Enemies quickly become difficult to kill with the fully-charged 'shout', and accurately jumping on them (the most powerful means of attack) is tricky to get right.
But it's there: the collision detection is fine and the gameplay is perfectly responsive. It just doesn't mess around.

The trick is to use Alice’s secret magical powers: press RUN to pause, then hit the I button to open a selection of spell books. At first there is only one magic available, but that's the one to go for: it reveals invisible power-ups (but only for a few seconds).
Turns out that every level is riddled with extra life containers, power-ups, and magic refills - all hidden in this weird parallel dimension.
Cute backgrounds, catchy music, bizarre enemies, boss rooms decorated with Louis Vuitton wallpaper... There are loads of nice little touches in here, more than enough to make it stand out as a truly memorable original PC Engine production.
But it's hard to explain the real reason why.

‘I can’t explain myself, I'm afraid, sir,’ said Alice, ‘because I’m not myself, you see.’
‘I don’t see,’ said the caterpillar.
