Part
of the very first batch of Neo Geo releases, Cyber-Lip
is a firm follower of the scool of Contra
(1987). It's a remarkably straightforward arcade
action effort that provides all of the basic requirements
for a enjoyable venture into the genre: smooth,
stylish and accessible 2-payer gameplay, multiple
weapons, colourful backdrops, and a hilarious
engrish plotline: "MY NAME IS CYBER-LIP.
I AM THE SUPER COMPUTER YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. I
AM NOT INSAIN, I HAVE JUST BEEN EVILLY REPROGRAMMED".
But then comes the issue of the difficulty level:
Cyber-Lip is just way too easy. It's
over before you know it - experienced players
will reach the end in one credit without too much
difficulty, since almost every end-of-level boss
can be dispatched in mere seconds with the help
of a few well-placed bazooka hits. The target
quickly becomes a 'one life finish', and even
that is far from a feat.
In all fairness, it suits the game just fine.
Most if not all early Neo Geo releases were rock
hard - so if anything, Cyber-Lip's comfortable
course came as a welcome break from the certain
death that awaits in Magician
Lord, Ninja
Combat and NAM-1975.
Not an unmissable classic by any means, but a
very interesting romp nonetheless. |
