Sega's
Game Gear
never quite did as well as it should have done, for
reasons that seem all too unfair in retrospect. Maybe
it was because the machine had too short a battery life,
maybe the Game
Boy just had too much of a foothold on the market,
or maybe it was because games like GG Aleste
were never released outside of Japan.
And that is simply a crime. GG Aleste is a
work of true greatness: a faultless, helter-skelter,
unforgettable thrill-ride of a shooting game that blows
away anything even vaguely similar on the Game Boy -
and on most 8-Bit consoles for that matter.
Super-slick gameplay, eight colourful rounds, two quick
'Bonus Areas' (at the start of rounds 4 and 6), a giant
flying fortress in round 5... The Aleste / Compile stamp
of quality is here en force, along with a distinctively
annoying feeling of disbelief that Sega let this game
slip by virtually unnoticed.
Oh well. That will forever be their burden to bear,
because as hand-held games go this is quite simply as
good as it gets. It easily tops the list of the best
the Game Gear has to offer, up there with The
GG Shinobi (1991), Psychic World (1991) and Fantasy
Zone Gear (1991).
But look out - today the game's undeniable quality and
subsequent 'collectible' reputation have seen the game
become one of the most sought-after releases on the
machine: difficult to find, and when you do the price
is never very friendly.
A sequel, GG
Aleste II (1993) appeared two years later. |
